Updates from Looking Glass
Looking Glass' Pathways Girls Program classroom has recently undergone an exciting transformation. Local artist Steven Wade Johnson (AKA Wayde Love) replaced a mural from 1995 that the staff and clients have been asking to be redone for years.
The Runaway and Homeless Youth (RHY) department of Looking Glass met at Wayne Morse Ranch for their annual retreat on Friday, June 22, which featured presentations, cultural awareness training, and strategic planning.
Looking Glass is excited to announce that our Runaway & Homeless Youth program has been selected by the National Safe Place organization for their "Model Program Award."
Two Looking Glass therapists, Aaron Porter and Carlyn Wierda are excited to launch a new process group for people of color at our Counseling Center. A process group is a form of group therapy where 5 to 10 individuals meet face-to-face to share their struggles and concerns with trained group therapists.
Looking Glass Center Point and Riverfront alternative schools held their respective 2018 graduation ceremonies on Thursday, June 14th celebrating the culmination of years of hard work and support from teachers, counselors, families and friends for a group of aspiring and inspiring local youth. Each school has its own traditions for graduation ceremonies and each was emotional and celebratory for another unique group of Looking Glass clients.
The week of June 4th through 8th was Spirit Week at Looking Glass' Center Point School. The activities of the week ended with an open house at the school preceding graduation events on Thursday, June 14th. "The purpose of the Open House is to celebrate the amazing work our students engaged in throughout the academic school year." Said Lynda Whitener the Program Director for Center Point.
Several members of various Looking Glass staff programs welcomed dozens of interested job applicants on Thursday, June 7th in the conference room at the Admin building. With a number of position openings, the various programs hoped to draw new applicants as well as engage the community in conversations about career opportunities.
We are proud to share this wonderful video which outlines much (but not all) of what our services provide and shares some of our success stories. To tell the entire Looking Glass story, of course, would take hours and hours. This small clip provides a glimpse into how Looking Glass impacts the Lane County community through a variety of important services.
We partied like it was 1929 - and raised a ton of money for our programs to help Lane County at-risk youth and families build a brighter future. Thank you to all involved in helping make this event a huge success. From event sponsors to event committee members, attendees, volunteers, staff and vendors - this one really took a village and the result was nothing short of spectacular…
