United Way of Lane County honored Looking Glass board member, former Eugene School District superintendent and longtime local advocate for youth George Russell with the Alton F. Baker award annually presented to an outstanding community leader in honor of Baker, who in 1946 started the original Community Chest, now known as United Way of Lane County.
As quoted in the March 4th article in The Register-Guard: “George has been a champion for children for decades, and has provided leadership and guidance in our equity work,” said Noreen Dunnells, CEO and president of United Way of Lane County. “He is an excellent Alton F. Baker honoree, and we’re so pleased to recognize him with this award.”
The award was presented to Russell at United Way's annual community celebration held on Wednesday, March 7th at The Hilton. Russell's speech to conclude the evening drew a standing ovation from a large and supportive crowd.
